Course Overview

In Australia, diabetes is a highly prevalent condition, accounting for 11% of all hospitalisations across the country. This Ausmed Course provides learners with essential context to understand and address the often complex needs of patients with diabetes, with a specific focus on providing a holistic approach to care within inpatient settings.

Topics
  • Inpatient statistics and prevalence
  • Clinical management recommendations and strategies
  • Glucose-lowering medication selection for inpatients
  • Safety and best practices for inpatient care
  • Insulin self-management
Need

There are currently around 1.8 million Australians living with a form of diabetes. Additionally, diabetes accounts for 11% of all Australian hospitalisations. With such a high prevalence, it is likely that all healthcare professionals working in inpatient settings will encounter patients with diabetes often. Ongoing education on understanding best-practice diabetes management and care is therefore essential to all those working in inpatient settings.

Purpose

The purpose of this course is to enhance the care of patients with diabetes in inpatient settings and encourage healthcare providers to consider diabetes care as part of a holistic approach to patient treatment.

  • Understand the relevance and clinical implications of attentive diabetes management in inpatient settings.
  • Implement clinical management recommendations and strategies.
  • Understand clinical considerations relevant to glucose-lowering medication selection when treating patients in the inpatient setting.
  • Identify and resolve opportunities for error when managing the treatment of a patient with diabetes.
  • Understand best practices for self-management of insulin in inpatient settings.
Target Audience

This Ausmed Course is intended for nurses, midwives and other healthcare professionals interested in increasing their knowledge of diabetes management in inpatient settings.
